Intensive Course in Controlled Substance Prescribing

The Intensive Course in Controlled Substance Prescribing is designed for physicians in all specialties, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and dentists who wish to increase their knowledge and ability to effectively prescribe controlled medications that have abuse potential. In addition, the course is designed for health professionals who treat chronic pain syndromes.

1. 1. Describe the pharmacologic profiles of benzodiazepines, opiates and other controlled drugs
2. 2. Identify the diagnostic criteria and management strategies for acute and chronic pain, anxiety disorder, insomnia, depression and substance abuse
3. 3. Employ interviewing techniques relating to the diagnosis and management of substance abuse in general and prescription drug abusers in particular
4. 4. Discuss case management strategies for the above diagnoses
5. 5. Discuss beliefs, stereotypes, and attitudes about controlled substance prescribing, controlled drug abusers and chemical dependency, and consider the therapeutic implications of treatments based upon these beliefs
6. 6. List the special clinical requirements necessary when prescribing controlled drugs

The registration fee for this course is $1300.

Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
