Overview

Many patients and healthcare providers have known for decades that missed and delayed diagnoses are a major problem in modern health care. Similarly, many have long known that healthcare access and outcomes in patients from underrepresented populations are unacceptably poor. Only more recently have researchers, educators, regulators, patients, patient advocates, and policymakers started to come together to address the epidemics of diagnostic errors and healthcare inequity. Additional important advancements in moving this work forward have included learning from excellence in addition to learning from adverse outcomes.

The Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine’s (SIDM) 16th annual international conference in Cleveland, OH (October 8-11, 2023), will bring together thought leaders in diagnosis and equity to explore a future in which we achieve excellence in diagnosis that is consistently safe, timely, accurate, and equitable for all patients. The Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine will present its 16th annual international conference The Future of Diagnosis: Achieving Excellence and Equity live in Cleveland, OH, October 8-11, 2023. The Conference brings together physicians, patients, nurses, educators, researchers, quality leaders, safety experts, risk managers and policymakers. Conference sessions will share the latest research, innovations, and solutions currently being evaluated or implemented. The Conference infrastructure will demonstrate how including patients and families as part of the diagnostic team leads to improved diagnostic outcomes. As a Patients-Included event, patients and family advocates are included in the planning and presentation of the Conference itself, ensuring that the conference remains patient-centered. This year’s conference content is being directed by the chairs, Drs. Verity Schaye and Harry Hoar and supported by a diverse Planning Committee representing numerous stakeholder groups.

The conference will include a Patient Summit, pre-conference short courses, keynote and plenary presentations, interactive workshops, poster presentations, oral abstracts, plus networking events and opportunities.

This year’s Conference will once again include the popular and dynamic session, “Clinical Problem Solving in Action,” a real-time unfolding case illustrating the clinical reasoning that leads to the diagnosis. Our plenary topics and speakers include: - Making systematic changes to improve health equity with Airica Steed, Chief Executive Officer & President, and Alan Nevel, Chief Equity and Community Impact Officer of The MetroHealth System - Innovations in education and technology with Michael Barone, Vice President, Competency Based Assessment, and Christopher Runyon, Senior Measurement Scientist of National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) - Conversations with AHRQ Diagnostic Safety Centers of Excellence leaders and faculty - Clinical Problem Solving in Action with Drs. Stephanie Sherman and Ann Kumfer
