Overview
The Doctor-Patient Relationship is a specially privileged relationship in our society. As a result, practitioners are afforded access to information and confidences by patients that are not available to anyone else. Along with this privilege comes a series of professional responsibilities for practitioners. More is expected of practitioners than from most other professionals in our society. The practice of medicine is governed by several important ethical precepts, including: confidentiality, beneficence, respect for patient autonomy, truth telling and the highest degree of professionalism. Practitioners work within the guidelines of these principles. Yet medical practice can also be challenged by these principles, particularly when two or more of them are in conflict. This expertly taught intensive course – liberally employing case presentations – focuses on applied ethics, from boundary issues to billing practices.
